The cast also allows us to learn about them personally within the framework of the game. The backstories range from amusing to charming, and the audience gets to know some of the characters, ensuring that we can always recognise a friendly face.
The ensemble’s enthusiasm is particularly noteworthy. The audience’s attention is captured and never let go as waves of exhilaration and devastation spread across the crowd. They’re all in perfect sync, and not a single artist appears to be lost in the action.
The fans all fed off each other as they fluidly moved from moment to moment, much like they would in a real match – you get the impression that if one person decided Man City would score, the other actors would have done the same.
We can all breathe a sigh of relief, because it does not put the audience at arm’s length as some opera has done in the past. The fans’ and the city’s histories are truly on display for all to see.
