Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley was created by a single individual — Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone — over the span of a half-decade as a spiritual successor to vintage Harvest Moon titles like Back to Nature on the PlayStation 1.

Stardew Valley is ostensibly a game about recreating your grandfather’s farm from the ground up by tending to your crops and raising cattle, but it’s really an RPG with so much content and addictive gameplay loops that you could play it indefinitely.

You can make yourself at home in Pelican Town’s population of misfits and weirdos, spend endless hours fishing and beach combing, or go dungeon exploring for rare materials and other goods in addition to your agricultural obligations.

While there is a barebones overarching story about either rebuilding the town’s community center or siding with Joja Mart’s corporate stooges (definitely not based on any real-world retail chain), Stardew Valley is all about individual stories that slowly unravel as you get to know your new neighbors.

The game is played on a calendar, and your daily routine will change with each season and on specific days when community events take place. Almost all of your activities are connected to an energy meter that recharges at the end of each day (if you get to bed on time!).

With only a limited amount of time and energy each day, Stardew Valley’s repetitive gameplay loop soon engrosses you, and it’s possible to lose real hours, days, and even weeks to it without even realizing it.

Description

Stardew Valley is a simulation role-playing video game developed by Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone. It was first released in February 2016 for Microsoft Windows, followed by macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One. Also by Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS, and Android. Players assume the role of a character who inherits their grandfather’s rundown farm in Stardew Valley after his death. The game is open-ended, letting players do things like grow crops and raise livestock. Manufacture goods, mine for ores, sell food, and socialize with the villagers. Including marrying and having children. It also allows you to play online with up to three other people.

Over the course of four years, Barone worked alone on the game. He was highly influenced by the Harvest Moon video game series. With minor modifications to solve some of the games’ flaws. He utilized it as a way to hone his programming and game-design abilities. Barone was approached by British firm Chucklefish midway through development. With the promise of publishing the game, allowing him to concentrate on finishing it. By 2021, Stardew Valley had sold over 15 million copies, making it a critical and commercial success.

Gameplay

Stardew Valley is an agricultural simulation game based on the Harvest Moon series of video games. At the start of the game, players construct a character who inherits a plot of land. And a little house in Pelican Town, which was originally held by their grandfather. Players can choose from a variety of farm kinds, each with its own theme and set of advantages and disadvantages. The countryside is initially covered with stones, trees, stumps, and weeds, which players must clear. In order to restart the farm and tend to crops. And cattle in order to make cash and grow the farm’s structures and facilities.

Players can also engage with the town’s non-player characters (NPCs), including forming relationships with them. Which can lead to marriage and the NPC assisting the player’s character with farming. Fishing, cooking, crafting, and exploring dynamically generated tunnels. With materials and ores to mine, and animals to fight, they are also available. Players can perform several tasks to earn extra money or to refurbish the town’s Community Center. By completing particular collections of items (called “bundles”). Bundles provide players with a variety of items, such as seeds and tools, for completing them. Players can unlock new places and game aspects by completing many bundles, such as a desert.

Other Actions

All of these actions must balanced against the character’s current state of health and tiredness. As well as the game’s internal time. The player can eat food that gives them perks that help them in specific tasks and circumstances. Food also replenishes the player’s health and energy, allowing them to do more tasks in a given day. The game has a simplified calendar, with four 28-day months corresponding to each season. Which crops can cultivated and which activities are profitable. Later in the game, players can develop a greenhouse and an island that can grow any crop in any season.
