ICEY
Similar to another beloved indie hit, Dust: An Elysian Tail, ICEY is a side-scrolling character action game. You basically run left and right through a variety of environments, fighting spectacular combos with a variety of cool enemies. In fact, the combat in ICEY is some of the best I’ve ever seen, and it’s both fast-paced and satisfying once you’ve mastered the game’s many cool moves.
That alone would make ICEY a strong recommendation for action game fans, but there’s something else going on that keeps blowing my mind. The game begins with a short tutorial level where you learn how to control your character. After defeating a boss, the fourth wall is shattered. A narrator will describe what you’re doing and point you in the right direction after the game “reboots.”
The levels in ICEY have multiple paths, so you can ignore the narrator’s directions and go exploring on your own, much to his dismay. In fact, the narrator’s snarky responses when you don’t do what he says are almost reason enough to defy him. ICEY has some surprising areas to discover and starts to blur the lines between the game world and the real world in clever ways. I haven’t squealed this much since Psycho Mantis read my memory card in Metal Gear Solid.
That’s probably all I can say without ruining the fun, but rest assured that ICEY is also a fantastic action game. You can learn all sorts of cool moves from a neat skill tree, as I mentioned earlier. The only drawbacks I can think of are the narrator’s voice acting, which may be on purpose as it fits into the story. Also, I wish your character would focus more on the screen’s center when moving, as the virtual buttons can get in the way. Finally, ICEY isn’t a particularly long game, but there’s plenty of reason to replay it.
Its clever storytelling will surely leave an impression on you long after the game is finished. If you liked Dust or other games like Devil May Cry on other platforms, I think you’ll like ICEY.
Description
ICEY is a side-scrolling action game in two dimensions. You will view the world through ICEY’s eyes and uncover the truth about her world. As you follow the narrator’s ubiquitous voice. ICEY is now available on iOS, bringing explosive hack-and-slash action to your iPhone or iPad. There’s also a meta tale in questioning the narrator’s motivations and deciding whether or not to accept their advice.
“Alright, you caught me! This ISN’T really just a simple 2D action game, and you WON’T be seeing through ICEY’s eyes… NOR will you learn the truth about her world.” says the narrator.
“ICEY is a Meta game in disguise. The narrator will constantly urge you in one direction, but you must ask, “Why? Why am I following his directions? Why can’t I learn the truth about this world and ICEY’s purpose here?” Fight against his tyranny, and uncover what’s really going on for yourself!
In fact, you can become ICEY, and let loose the shackles of your own identity. You are ICEY, and ICEY is you… if you want it that way. Feel free to keep hold of your own self, if you wish.
Now Is the Time For You to Discover the Truth.
You See? ICEY, I See!

Tough Enemies
In ICEY, you’ll face off against a variety of opponents, including bosses. Make use of your skills to eliminate them all. And be wary of the narrator who tells you how things are going to turn out… Can you trust him?
More Information on Icey
ICEY is visually stunning. The game’s visuals are strongly anime-influenced, especially with ICEY’s character design. ICEY is presented in 2D, but the backdrops are quite detailed and give the game a sense of depth. As a result, it’s almost pseudo-3D. The environments, as well as enemy robots, are fairly detailed and textured. You’ll feel right at home if you’re an anime enthusiast. ICEY’s animations are smooth and fluid, thus there was no lag on my iPhone 8 Plus. The sound effects are wonderfully done, and the atmospheric and ambient soundtrack is soothing to listen to. Furthermore, the peculiar narration you hear while playing is wonderfully human-like and seems normal. Yet it will make you doubt everything. As you might expect, this is where the game’s meta aspect comes into play.
