Peekaboo Barn

Though the saying “the best things in life are frequently the simplest things,” it is true that sometimes the simplest things are the best things. iPhone applications are a fantastic example; many of the finest applications are simple tools or games that perform one or two tasks exceptionally well. Peekaboo Barn, developed by Night & Day Studios, is an excellent example of a children’s game that provides straightforward, well-crafted fun for toddlers without a lot of flash, dash, or fluff.

In the eyes of a more seasoned gamer, the premise may appear to be astonishingly simple: view the barn, hear the sound, tap on the door to unlock it, and then see the animal. As a result, toddlers learn sounds by hearing the animal’s call before the barn door opens, cause and effect by tapping the barn door to open it, as well as to recognize and name the animals.

The UI of the game is nicely thought out, and it takes no more than one or two taps to get things going. Both the audio and the artwork — which was created by New Yorker regular Divya Srinivasan — are of high quality and pleasing to the eye. Although the Spanish language option is convenient, I must admit that it left me longing for more language alternatives. French and Mandarin are the first two that come to mind.

Description

Peekaboo Barn begins with a red barn that bounces with muffled sounds, drawing children in. They tap on the door to expose a goat, horse, cow, duck, or other animal hidden behind it. Depending on the situation. Each animal is labeled in the chosen language by the narrator. And the name of the animal is displayed in lowercase letters for the children. The children must press the screen again to close the barn door and continue cycling through the animals. The game comes to a conclusion when the sun sets and all of the animals. Retire to their respective sleeping quarters in the barn.

It doesn’t get any easier than Peekaboo Barn. A barn shakes, enticing children to tap on its sides. The more time children spend waiting, the more muffled animal sounds they hear. When children tap the barn, the doors open, revealing an animal hidden within. Each animal’s name appears inscribed on the screen, and a voice says the animal’s name as it appears. Children tap the door once more to close it and move on to the next animal. This procedure repeats through 13 animals, during which time the day goes. To night and the children witness the animals resting in the barn. After which the cycle begins all over again.
