Google Play Books is easy to use. A book purchased and downloaded from Google Play automatically appears in your Books app on all devices linked to your Google account. To navigate a book, use the bottom scrubber bar or the top button to access the interactive table of contents. The 3D page-turning animation is one of my favorite features. It’s hardly revolutionary, but it polishes an otherwise conventional experience.
While reading, the app gives you a lot of graphic design possibilities. Day (black text on white background), Night (white text on black background), and Sepia. Then there’s the ability to modify the line height and font size. You can also choose between a clean, “Flowing text” version and the original scanned pages, which are amusing but not as easy to read. However, even in horizontal mode, phones can only show one page per screen.
In terms of features, Google Play Books is towards the front of the e-reader pack, albeit not always. The latest app update includes integrated translation, maps, dictionary, and highlighting. To see the tools in action, simply tap and hold on a block of text from the page. Depending on the target text, Google may display you a short description, a Wikipedia link, a translation (provided by Google Translate), or even a map. These tools have been invaluable to me, especially when I’m reading books with non-English material. The highlighter is also useful, and it may be activated by tapping a button at the top of the screen. Infuriatingly, I can’t find a way to un-highlight text. Also, being able to name bookmarks would be very useful for school reading.
My main issue with Google Play Books is that you can’t import or sideload books. It’s a shame Google’s e-reader software doesn’t support DRM-free e-books, especially since there are so many sources online. And I’m sure many more users agree.
