Levelhead: Infinitely Challenging Platformer

Let’s just agree that Levelhead is clearly inspired by Super Mario Maker, so let’s get that out of the way. They’re comparable in that they both aim to allow people to create, share, and play one another’s 2D platformer levels utilizing a comprehensive set of tools. It’s difficult to compete with Mario’s level of refinement and charm, but developers Butterscotch Shenanigans put forward a valiant effort to do so. Levelhead is a superb level-builder that benefits greatly from cross-platform flexibility and a really smart level curation mechanism, even if its mobile form isn’t the best way to play levels.

The strongest evidence of this is front-and-center in the game’s primary design. Levelhead is more than just a clone of Super Mario Maker. You play as a delivery robot tasked with retrieving and depositing packages from other worlds. As a result, each level is a two-step procedure. Rather than merely completing a level, you must first locate an object and then figure out the best approach to transport it to the exit.

In the broad scheme of things, this appears to be a minor distinction. After all, the remainder of the game is very much the same as Mario’s. You can still run and leap in 2D space, jump on adversaries to destroy them, and so on. However, as you progress through the game’s pre-built introductory stages, you’ll soon discover that this opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Package retrieval is an open invitation to create non-linear levels, and there are numerous tools to help and encourage this style of design.

This gets us to the second half of the game, Levelhead. The number of creativity tools available in this game is astounding. Part of this is due to the fact that items in Levelhead aren’t as instantly recognized as they are in Mario Maker, but it’s also due to the abundance of switches, portals, grappling spots, and other oddities that allow you to create levels that you wouldn’t see in a standard platformer.
