Description
If you have kids, you probably care about what they do on their phones. But don’t misunderstand. You want them to explore, create but there are several things kids shouldn’t do on an internet-connected phone or tablet. So, what happens if your kid requests an Android? You can either say no straight now or use Google’s Family Link program, which includes parental controls.
Family Link is a free app for Android and iOS that allows parents to monitor their children’s online activities. It allows you to create and manage a child’s Google account. This account is similar to an adult account, but Google limits what it may access. Your child’s device’s screen time limits, location, and installation permissions may all be managed remotely via Family Link.
Why Use Google Family Link?
Limit Screen Time
The obsessive use of modern technology by children can harm their academics and physical activity. Setting screen time limitations on Android or ChromeOS devices allow parents to let their kids use their phones and computers, but not excessively.
Approve downloads and purchases
How often have we heard of parents discovering a credit card bill containing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars through unknowing in-app purchases? With Family Link, parents can approve or deny an app or a microtransaction.
It also allows parents to control the accessibility of particular apps or services depending on maturity ratings, preventing minors from downloading inappropriate content.
Secure Search
Our phones and laptops putting the world at our fingertips have their benefits and drawbacks. If you don’t want your kids searching for inappropriate content or themes, Family Link lets you utilize Google SafeSearch to filter out explicit results.
How does it work?
Here’s how Family Link works on Android devices
Parents are notified when their children attempt to download an app or visit a website. They get extensive analytics on what apps and services their kids use.
Once parents download the Family Link app on their phones and their children’s phones, they can choose which apps and services their children can use. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and Google’s own internal review board help determine app content age-appropriacy (Maps is rated ‘G’).
Family Link also features broader device limitations, such as limiting kids’ screen time each day. Parents can designate “blackout periods” for kids (like dinner or sleep), and a Lock Devices Now option disables a child’s gadget immediately.
Indeed, it’s crucial to keep talking about what they do online and let them keep building online resilience.
